Our Life-Affirming Mission Explained

Divine Assignment

There is always an assignment – a divine mission to make a difference in the world.  Those who work through and support the Pregnancy Resource Center of Athens County carry out one of the most important missions in our community.  What is it?  To empower individuals and families to make life-affirming decisions about relationships, sexual health, pregnancy, and parenting.  But what exactly does this mean for each of the PRC’s four core services?  How do we empower our clients to make life-affirming choices?

First and Foremost

Our core services demonstrate the value of each client that comes through our doors by respecting them and reflecting to them their inherent and God-given dignity.  This is the first step to carrying out our mission.  To affirm the lives of those entrusted us.

Pregnancy Testing

The PRC’s Pregnancy Testing and Options Counseling provides a safe place for women and their partners to process their crisis pregnancies.  In each case, while awaiting their test result, consultants and clients discuss pregnancy options and process decision-making thoughts.  Many clients come thinking abortion is their only option.  The PRC provides information regarding adoption and parenting and gives community support resources. They are given information that shows them abortion is not inevitable.  Because of this service, clients have what they need to make the informed, life-affirming choice of carrying their pregnancy to term.

After Abortion Support

The PRC also offers After Abortion Support services where we walk alongside women and men with an abortion experience in their pasts.  As a result of their abortion decisions, some may struggle.  Some may struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. Others may self-harm.  Some may be promiscuous.  Others may struggle with depression or develop eating disorders.  Additionally, most are not even aware that some of their life struggles may be directly related to their abortion experiences – struggles that may stem from the shame and guilt they may be feeling.  Through its After Abortion Support program, the PRC helps clients explore the value of forgiveness and grief processing to restore wholeness to a person’s life.

STI Testing and Treatment Clinic

Our STI Testing and Treatment Clinic provides clients confidential, patient-centered care. The PRC focuses on causes of sexual health risk, how to eliminate these risks, healthy relationships and self-efficacy. Our clients have the opportunity to assess how their current lifestyle fits into their long-term plans and learn to value themselves by implementing positive changes to live healthier, safer, and more intentional lives.

Pregnancy and Parenting Essentials Program

Participants receive quality, evidence-based pregnancy and parenting education in addition to on-going, person-centered emotional and material support as new or expecting parents. Our program reflects the value of family and highlights the importance of each family member in their unique role. They learn how to establish healthy relationships, positive parenting techniques for newborns through toddlerhood, how to navigate single or co-parenting family issues, and special lessons specifically for our fathers – to name a few sessions.  The PRC meets participants where they are in their circumstances and helps them gain the knowledge and material goods necessary to raise healthy families.
